Mucus provides many benefits to the body. It protects the throat from pollen and bacteria. It even protects your stomach from stomach acid. When too much mucus is produced, however, it can become quite bothersome. This sticky substance can begin to build up in the back of your throat. That makes it difficult to swallow your food and breathe properly. There are some things you can do to relieve the extra mucus.
Blow your nose. This will help to get rid of some mucus that may be sliding down into your throat.
Place four oz. of warm water in a glass and add a tbsp. of salt. Mix it together and gargle with it. The salt will help to dry up the mucus in your throat. You can gargle as often as you need to, but three times a day is recommended.
Take a hot shower. The steam will release the mucus so you can spit it out. The steam will keep your throat clear for about an hour. That provides you with a little bit of relief.
Add one tbsp. of lime juice to four oz. of water. Then add one tbsp. of honey. Mix these ingredients together. Drink the mixture. The honey is great at soothing your throat, and the lime juice will eat away at the excess mucus. This will give you the relief you need when the steam from the shower wears off.
You can always use an over-the-counter medication to relieve the excess mucus in your throat.
Stay away from dairy products, which will produce even more mucus.
