Metabolization is the process by which your body converts food to energy. While there are things that will cause you to have a spike or dip in metabolism, metabolism is generally a natural process that your body regulates depending on your food intake. However, aerobic exercises like jogging can raise your metabolism.
How Metabolization Works
Your body gets energy from three basic sources: carbohydrates, fats and protein. During activity, these food sources are converted into ATP, a substance which the body uses as energy to fuel itself. Even normal activities such as breathing and eating require energy. The speed at which the food is converted into energy is called the metabolic rate, and your metabolic rate during these ordinary daily activities is called the basal metabolic rate. Because these are normal activities that your body is used to, you will generally keep a constant basal metabolic rate unless you do an activity that requires more energy.
Energy Needed for Jogging
The American Council on Exercise states that there are three pathways that your body uses to convert ATP into energy: immediate, intermediate and long term. The immediate pathway is used during anaerobic exercises such as strength training with weights or sprinting, both of which are strenuous on the body and don't use oxygen. The long term pathway is generally used during daily activity. During aerobic activities like jogging, you are using the intermediate metabolic pathway. This causes your metabolism to speed up just a little as you need more energy to perform your activity.
How Long It Lasts
The rise in metabolic rate during jogging does not last forever. Also, because the ATP is release slowly into the body over the course of the exercise, your metabolism is not boosted too much. MayoClinic.com states that while exercise causes an increase in metabolic rate due to energy needs, the rate returns to basal metabolic rate when the exercise is over. There are many other factors in metabolic rate that are outside of your control such as your age and sex, but one key to metabolism that you can control is your eating habits. Your body expends energy based on how many calories you take in. Also, the rate at which calories are taken in helps decide the rate at which calories are burned. So, if you take in too much food, your metabolism will slow down as you don't need as much energy as you are taking in. On the other hand, if you starve yourself, your metabolism will slow down as your body will conserve energy until it gets more.
Diet and Exercise
If you are using jogging as way of increasing metabolism, the American Council on Exercise recommends also adapting your diet accordingly. You will need energy for the long-term exercise of jogging, therefore you should eat enough before the workout for your body to be able to complete the workout. In order to maintain a high metabolic rate, you should take in small amounts of calories throughout the day to keep your body from storing energy.
